Why I don't like Zumba!Posted on 6:03pm Wednesday 16th Nov 2011 Zumba is incredibly popular, trendy and without a doubt my biggest competition. I often get asked why I don't become Zumba certified and to be perfectly frank the reason is simply I don't want to. I appreciate 100% that Zumba is current and I actually don't have anything bad to say about it except it's not for me. Now I'll hold my hands up and say I've only actually been to one Zumba class, but for me that was enough. Since then to be honest as Zumba is competition I've kept an eye on it and watched classes on You Tube and even purchased a DVD which I did for 5 minutes and had enough. Now as I know it's this style of working out that is popular I want to explain why I won't becoming Zumba certified and justify my reasons of dislike. Here is my top 5 reasons: 1)I simply can't deny the fact I hate the slogan 'Ditch the Workout and Join the Party'! I spend a lot of time and effort trying to help people realise they need to make a lifestyle change and learn to love exercise. This isn't easy as many of us hate exercise and I use to be one of them. Rather than avoiding the fact it's exercise we should be embracing this fact. In my opinion it's just very clever target marketing used to encourage those people who know they need to exercise but hate it. I'm proud of the fact that Work it Baby is in fact exercise and I'm extremely delighted and proud to say it's a workout not a party and we are serious about results. 2)I can't do it! Zumba is very dance inspired. I cannot dance! I exercise to be healthy and so whilst I stand there wondering what the heck I'm doing feeling like an idiot I'm wasting a hour.....Mums don't have an hour to waste. 3)I genuinely believe there are more effective ways of getting results. 4)When I speak to people who ask me why I'm not doing Zumba I tell them because I didn't personally enjoy it. Reason being I spent so long trying to work out what I was doing that I didn't get a workout. The response is very often 'it doesn't matter you just go with the flow in Zumba, freestyle and enjoy'. As an instructor participants making it up worries me for the obvious reasons – results achieved and injuries. 5)Finally I like being different. Zumba is everywhere. Why follow the trend when you can be the trend. I really feel my business will survive perfectly well without Zumba, in fact I have regulars who've tried Zumba and now come to my class every week. If you like being with the girls and dancing then without question Zumba is perfect for you but it's not perfect for me and that's fine. Getting in shape isn't easy so finding what works for you is important. Learn to love exercise and find what's right for you whether than be Zumba, pole dancing, boot camp and so forth Love the not Zumba certified Kirsty xx
Jennifer Posted on 11:58pm Thursday 16th May 2013 Hey girl, I'm right there with you; I actually googled "don't like Zumba" and found this! I thought I was the only one on earth. I'm a fitness instructor too; the difference w/ me is I love to dance - hence I get tons of people bugging me about why I don't teach Zumba. When I tell them I don't like it they always ask why and try to convince me why I should! Which just makes me dislike it even more. I've tried several workshops and videos,I just don't like it. I found it boring and not very challenging aerobically. I couldn't wait for it to be over! I would much rather do some sort of dance aerobics class that's continuous (not stop-and-go with too many different styles), and involves learning a routine that actually involves some level of skill. Anyone can do Zumba, even if they can't walk and chew gum at the same time. Call me crazy, but I liked it better when we actually learned skills in exercise classes and could build on those skills. Remember that? Zumba is designed so any dummy off the street can walk in and convince themselves they're "dancing" (even though, IMO, most of them are not). If most of these people that take Zumba tried to take a real dance class, forget it - they'd never be able to do it. I know b/c I get some of these people in my regular classes, and they can't even march to music. Yet they tell me they can do Zumba (which they consider "dancing"). Yikes.
